Zinciriye Medresesi

Zinciriye Medrese (also known as Sincariye Medrese)

Zinciriye Medrese is a historic medrese located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. While there are no exact records regarding the construction date and architecture of the structure, it is generally believed to have been built around 1236 during the reign of the Ayyubid ruler Malik Salih Najm al-Din. However, some sources suggest that the medrese might have been commissioned by Kutbuddin Muzaffer II Sökmen during the Artukid period in 1198.

History:

There is a widespread belief that the medrese was constructed around 1236 during the reign of Ayyubid ruler Malik Salih Najm al-Din. According to other sources, it might have been built by Kutbuddin Muzaffer II Sökmen during the Artukid period in 1198.

Architect and Construction:

The architect of the medrese is known as Abu Dirhem, as indicated by an inscription found on the southwest side. It is constructed as a single-story building using cut basalt stone.

Architectural Features:

The entrance gate is located on the northern side of the medrese. The medrese has two iwans, with the entrance iwan covered by a cross vault. The courtyard is open-air and surrounded by arched colonnades. There is a fountain in the middle of the courtyard. Different chambers are situated around the courtyard.

Changes in Use:

Until World War I, the medrese served as a madrasa, later converted into a museum, and currently functions as a Quran school.

Zinciriye Medrese represents an important structure embodying the historical fabric and architectural richness of Diyarbakır. Its various uses throughout history reflect the medrese's role in the cultural and historical development of the region.
