Saint George Church

Saint George Church is a historic church located in Diyarbakır, situated on high cliffs in the northeastern corner of the Inner Castle. This church stands out as the only church in Sur that is not within the walls, due to its location on the high cliffs overlooking the Tigris River.

While the exact construction date of the church is uncertain, it is believed to have been built in the 3rd century AD. Saint George Church is assumed to have originally served as a temple for polytheistic religions. Additionally, there is a possibility that it was used as a fire temple during the Roman period.

During the Artukid period, the church functioned as the bathhouse of the palace. Today, it has been restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and serves as an art gallery. The church's varied uses throughout history make it an important structure reflecting the historical layers of the region.

The conversion of Saint George Church into an art gallery today is a significant step in preserving and promoting its historical and cultural richness. The architectural details and history of the church offer visitors an opportunity to explore the historical fabric of Diyarbakır.
