Hüsrev Pasha Mosque

Hüsrev Pasha Mosque

General Information: Hüsrev Pasha Mosque is a historical mosque located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, Turkey. It is situated in a neighborhood with the same name and was commissioned by Divane Hüsrev Pasha. The mosque was converted from a small mosque to its current state as a mosque with a minaret in 1728. It underwent restoration by the Directorate of Foundations between 1991 and 1992.

History and Architecture: While the exact construction date of the mosque is unknown, it is known to have been built as a madrasa between 1521 and 1528 by the second Ottoman governor of Diyarbakır, Divane Hüsrev Pasha. Over time, the small mosque section began to be used by the public, and in 1728, it was converted into a mosque. Architecturally, it follows a rectangular layout covering an area in the north-south direction, with a courtyard.

Architectural Details: Entry to the mosque is through a vaulted gate with a pointed arch. Square-sectioned pylon-supported porticoes line three sides of the rectangular courtyard. The tops of the pointed arch porticoes are covered with domes, and behind each, there are ten cells in a square shape, each illuminated by a window. The cells on the qibla side are rectangular in plan and covered with barrel vaults. Dome-covered cells were added on the sides between the mosque and the courtyard. The minaret rises independently from the west of the courtyard entrance. Built from black and white cut stone, the minaret has a cylindrical body and reflects the Seljuk architectural style. Two-colored cut stone materials were used, and exterior decorations were placed on the gate leading to the courtyard and on the minaret.
