Hevsel Bahçeleri (Hevsel Gardens )

Hevsel Gardens cover approximately seven hundred hectares of fertile land along the banks of the Tigris River, between the Diyarbakır Fortress and the river valley. Known as the largest bird paradise in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, the Hevsel Gardens provide a habitat for various species, catering to the needs of many different types of habitats.

These gardens are home to over 180 bird species, as well as many mammal species such as hedgehogs, foxes, martens, squirrels, and porcupines. The Hevsel Gardens serve as a station, resting place, shelter, and protection area for migratory birds. In addition to bird species specific to the region, such as the booted warbler and the rose-ringed parakeet, there are also predatory birds including the peregrine falcon, red kite, honey buzzard, short-toed snake eagle, kestrel, hobby, and lesser kestrel. Moreover, they host the rare summer hawk in Turkey.

In 2013, the Hevsel Gardens were nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage List and were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015. This declaration signifies international recognition of the region's biological diversity, ecosystems, and cultural significance.
