According to legend, the Companions of the Cave (Ashab-ı Kehf), who resisted the pagan king, endured various tortures and took refuge in a cave with their dog, slept for a miraculous 309 years. It is believed that one of the 34 caves where the Companions of the Cave supposedly slept for years is located within the boundaries of the Lice district in Diyarbakır.
